Infrared Thermography for Sewer Inspections
Many of Europe’s sewer systems are now causing problems
to due to there old age and under-capacity, many of Europe’s
older cities was designed for populations many times smaller
than present day.
Much of the water in a typical sewer is, in fact, ground
water which enters through cracks in the sewer casing &
joints etc. The water entering the sewer in this manner is
usually at a lower temperature than the organically decomposing
sewage, thus enabling infrared thermography survey to locate
the sources of ground water ingress - and consequently the
location of the cracks and misalignment of the pipes due to
subsidence.
 In
addition, the temperature differential between the sewage
and the surrounding ground allows voids behind the sewer walls
to be detected, this is caused by the result of the soil having
been washed away and are the main reason why subsidence and
sewer collapses occur.
